About “AWAREMI-TAI OnTheWeb”

The origins and development of this site.

1.historical background long before the birth1

It was a time before the Internet and before Windows 95, so TCP/IP connections were not common. In short, it was the time when Okaden was in college. The cost of communication at that time was really huge, as it was charged at 10 yen per minute. The cost of communication at that time was really huge.

At that time, Fujitsu’s “Nifty” and NEC’s “PC-VAN” were the two largest personal computer communication services. IBM’s “People” network was in third place, far ahead of Fujitsu’s “Nifty” and NEC’s “PC-VAN”.

Okaden ran a conference room on People called the Online Comedy Institute. It started small, but eventually became a thriving conference room that received monthly rebates and subsidies for communications expenses from People.

The basic idea of this “Online Comedy Laboratory” was that Okaden would give a “theme” each week, and the participants would write funny posts in response to the theme. The theme was due in a week, and the funniest entry would win a prize. It was an online comedy contest.

However, times were changing rapidly, and as Windows 95 went on sale, the “Internet” gradually began to penetrate the general public. At first, the only sites available on the Internet were the Prime Minister’s official residence, NTT’s site, and other university academic sites, but the Internet was rapidly expanding. At the same time, the number of PC communication users, which had been increasing, began to decline.

The Online Comedy Institute was a conference room that could not exist without a lot of “story submissions”. Therefore, it had to have a certain number of readers. Therefore, anticipating the Internet age, we established a website called “Online Comedy Research Center World Wide Annex,” which was linked to the topic progression of PC communication. This was the first web production.

However, this “World Wide Web Annex” did not allow for seamless information sharing with personal computer communications. It was not very appealing, with only a few simple contents, such as announcements and reports of the results of the contests, and a call for submissions by e-mail.

Okaden, fearing that this was not a system that would keep readers coming back regularly, created a “back menu” called “Okaden’s Diet!? Diary”. This was in 1997.

In the meantime, the era of personal computer communications quickly dissolved. The “Online Comedy Research Institute” was also closed due to sluggish access. Naturally, “World Wide Annex” was also closed, and “Diet! Diary,” which was in the middle of a series of articles, had no place to go. Therefore, I moved my activities to Geocities and started “Okaden’s Diet! Diary” as an independent content.

Diet! Diary” lasted for a little over a year, but the series ended with a declaration of defeat, and since Geocities had a rule that content would be deleted if it had not been updated for three months, there was no place for it after the series ended. However, he had an epiphany: “Next to dieting, binge eating and drinking,” and decided to launch a new food-related website.

Moved from Geocities/Heartland (an area for posting diaries, etc.) to Geocities/Foodpia (an area for sites related to food and drink) and began operating under the name “Okaden’s EatUpTheWorld! Here, he began to write “Gastronomic Supremacist Manifesto” and “In Between the Hells of Eating (now integrated into Gastronomic Supremacist Manifesto)” in 1999.

3.The birth of AWAREMI-TAI OnTheWeb

At that time, the Awalemi Unit was actively engaged in activities, which were documented by digital cameras. Because of the large size of the photo data, it was impossible to send and receive e-mail attachments among friends. Therefore, we started to use a certain part of the “EatUpTheWorld!” website (URL without any external links) as a photo repository. However, as the size of the photos grew, the limited capacity of Geocities soon reached its limit, and I was forced to move again.

Therefore, we signed a contract with a provider for a paid rental server and also acquired our own domain name. This became “Awalemitai OnTheWeb. The site was put into operation on June 1, 2000.

It is strange to think that this site was born because “I want a data storage place for my digital camera photos.

4.その後のサイト

Since the capacity has been secured, the site is being used behind the scenes to “share photos of Okaden shoots with Awalemitai members” in addition to the ostensible site.

be that as it may

Initially, since it was moved from “EatUpTheWorld!”, it dealt only with food-related topics, but it began to deal with non-food topics as well, such as “Awaremitai Activity Record” and “Thought Circuit Revolving Payment”.

2001

Updates stopped for three months due to a crash of Okaden’s home PC. At that time, the screen layout and corner organization were completely revised.

2007

The site was completely closed once in order to become XTML1.1 compliant. The site was restored page by page. In addition, typographical errors and omissions were corrected.

2013

The “AWAREMI-TAI OnTheWeb” logo is changed to Version 2, replacing the logo created by Okaden that has been used since 2000 with one created by a professional designer.

2014

The time and effort required to update the site was too much for Okaden’s leisure time, so he switched to a blog format using WordPress. The site was also redesigned with a responsive web design UI so that it can be easily viewed from smartphones and tablets.

The XTML1.1 that we went to the trouble of creating will be dropped and HTML5 will be used.

2016

The site became too heavy and difficult to browse and update, so we moved from our 16-year old “Sakura Internet” rental server to “X server”.

2022

  • Corner reorganization. The “Soba-Eating Racial Behavior Observation” and “Walking Around the Exploded Art” corners were closed. Oka-Deus” corner is newly established.
  • Because the site has grown so large that it has become a problem for management, we moved the rental server + changed the WordPress theme. Aiming to increase the speed of display.

Here’s a quick rundown.
